Hospital Car Transport

This service was originally set up in 2005 within the Mendip District Council Area following the reorganisation of the Patient Transport Service by the NHS. The service provides transport for individuals to outpatient departments at hospitals and other medical appointments. Due to increasing demand, the service has since been extended and now includes the Parishes of Cheddar and Axbridge, as well as parts of Sedgemoor.

The service is operated by volunteer car drivers who offer their time free of charge but receive reimbursement of expenses in respect of the mileage they incur.

There is a charge for this service based on the overall mileage, plus an administration fee of £2.50. Additional costs may be incurred if your appointment is longer than 2 hours. (Amendment charge/admin fee of £2.50.)

Please note - the service is only available where the distance to the hospital is more than 12 miles.

Individuals who possess an English National Concessionary Travel Scheme Bus Pass will qualify for a reduction in charges on hospital car journeys, provided their pickup time is after 9:30am.

Charge rates are usually 65p per mile charged from the driver’s door, to client, and then onto the hospital. Mileage is included for the driver to return home as well. If an appointment goes over 2 hours, clients are charged for two trips.

All bookings are charged a £2.50 admin fee, and the maximum pass holder discount is £10.
